About The Artwork

The mixed-media painting represents Mimi the calf (I named her when I saw her at a few days' age) that pulled my attention towards painting cows. When the feeding time was up and the farmer threw the hay from the haystack upstairs she always stood under the hay-waterfall and waited to get buried under it. Then she would pop out her head and a part of the body and gave me the chance to take a photo of the scene. I used that photo for the reference and used oil paint, golden leaves, and actual hay, applied with glue and sealed with acrylic medium, which makes it a bit heavier from a normal oil or acrylic painting of the same size. Because of the applied materials, the painting is significantly heavier than common 2D paintings of the same size.

Lara Ješe is an artist living and working in Kranj, Slovenia. She holds an MFA in Painting and Fine Arts, acquired at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, University of Ljubljana in Slovenia. She has also studied at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig, expanding her knowledge in the fields of Graphic Printing. Growing up in the countryside near Kranj, Slovenia, she found her artistic interest in animals, particularly horses and cattle, which became a recurrent subject in her work. The motif allows her to explore the balance between portraiture and figure, in other words between psyche and the flesh, and to research the body within allegorical situations.
