My work takes on a stream-of-consciousness approach, where the “act of doing” or process is equally important to the finished piece. Rendered in ambiguity yet painted with clear definitiveness, organic shapes, rhythmic lines, and graphic marks develop, leaving each piece open to the viewers’ own interpretation. I find beauty in the repetitions of painterly gesture, that become scribbles, a cursive I decode. I grapple with this sense of visual language and the history from which it came. I feel the sensation of colors that scream and subjects of thoughts seeking to survive. The work is about doing. The subjects develop as I work. I find comfort in solving the mystery. The work quietly talks and messages are found. Through the radiation of color, their organic shapes emit energy that motivates me to never stop. Retired Pratt @ Munson Williams Proctor Art Institute. Instructor and Gallery Director "John's palette embodies rich and vibrant hues with lighter gradients and occasional streaks of surprise. He poetically composes his reality on a two dimensional surface. Using color as his structure he reinforces it with shapes that are sometimes passive and at times crisp with firm outlined. The lyrical canvases are bursting with activity. John is not interesting in reflecting realism; His journey is to explore real subjects in a "modernist quest for color." Compositions activated by lines make them expressive not defiant. Subjects are deft and tautly rhythmic. His canvases show hand/eye at work. The subjects here riff on landscapes mostly and figuration with some interiors, showing a more complex view of the world." ArtReview
