Art Description

Painting: Acrylic, Chalk, Pastel, Pencil on Canvas.

I am interested in process – disrupting the notion of composition and form. The aim is for the image to be revealed through the rigorous application of process in a systematic manner. I am concerned with how to ensure the integrity of each painting without the arbitrary decision-making of the painter. I would want the viewer to understand that the object in front of them is not a representation of an experience but that it is the experience itself.
Influences in my work range from the Cubists, through to Kandinsky, the Russian Constructivists, the American Abstract Expressionists, the Process painters of the 60’s including Mark Rothko, Morris Louis and Helen Frankenthaler, and many friends and colleagues. Later influences include the post-modern abstractionists.
In addition my work explores how colours and process are influenced by light, landscape and the marine environment.
