I’ve been living in the beautiful PNW for 10 years and wanted to commemorate my a decade in this special place by making a series of paintings that delight in the majestic beauty of this area. I love living here because of the gorgeous nature that surrounds me, I am an avid hiker and occasional backpacker, and a frequent trail-side nap taker. Napping with a view is something of a hobby of mine: everyone wants to hike to get to beautiful view points, to take in the expansive vistas and marvel at them. And to me, the ultimate luxury is closing my eyes when I reach them. I mean, what’s more spoiled and pampered than a quick nod and a nodding off to the very thing others travel many miles just to glimpse? I love wide open places, windswept cliffs overlooking the ocean, mountain slopes facing sprawling valleys, crashing waves and haystack rocks in the distance. They all inspire me, relax me and make me feel safe and cozy enough for a nap. Perhaps there is only so much beauty I can take in? Or maybe because I work with visual images all day long, something in me wants to be in a majestically beautiful place and absorb it through my usually less favored senses? I am not sure, but I am at my most relaxed when I close my eyes to the most stunning views in the Pacific Northwest.

Tatyana Ostapenko’s paintings record the daily lives of people who usually don’t make it into official historical records. She uses images from her native Ukraine to speak about universal human experiences. Her work expresses empathy and hope in the face of adversity. After a few years of working as a Russian-English interpreter while making art, Tatyana is delighted to dedicate herself to a full-time studio practice. In response to the pandemic, she has moved her studio to her dining room and has been using Instagram Live to paint while hosting conversations with other homebound artists. Tatyana’s artwork has been exhibited at the Geoje International Art Festival in South Korea, Odessa Contemporary Art Biennial in Ukraine, Governors Island Art Fair in NYC, Cape Cod Art Museum in Dennis, MA, Littman Gallery in Portland and Locker 50b in Richmond, VA. She is a recipient of Professional Development Grants from the Regional Arts and Culture Council and the Oregon Arts Commission. Her paintings have been purchased by public, corporate and private collections, including the City of Seattle and Stumptown Coffee. Born and raised in the Soviet Union, Tatyana currently lives in Portland, OR. She holds a BFA in Studio Practice from Portland State University.
