ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I create eco-friendly paintings inspired by nature and backcountry hiking adventures. In 2016 I backpacked in Costa Rica, below the rim of the Grand Canyon, and thru-hiked the 250 mile John Muir Trail from Yosemite to Mt. Whitney. In 2017 I spent a week hiking in the backcountry of Glacier National Park and a week in the Cascades. In 2018 I backpacked in Kawai. I do tiny sketches while in the field, then create larger pieces in the studio. My paintings focus on nature’s powerful colors and energy, often with a figurative quality. I make my art supplies eco-friendly. I find clays in creekbeds and source natural pigments that I hand-mix with walnut oil. I stretch my own canvas using organic cotton and plant-based gesso, free of horse hooves or rabbit skin.

I am a natural pigment painter inspired by nature while backpacking. I responsibly forage for clay on or near my property in Southern Indiana. I sundry the clays and dirt, then crush and mix with walnut oil. I stretch my canvas using organic cotton canvas, and plant-based gesso. I love to go on thru-hikes in the wilderness, often for a couple of weeks with only what I can carry in my backpack. Even when in survival mode I try to sketch and take photos, so that back in the studio I can use as reference, but then I put them away, and just let my imagination and memory play with colors, textures.
