Since 2006 Valerie has been exploring various painting techniques, since 2009 she has been actively producing quality pieces of art. Ms. Gilbert has regular showings, either solo or as part of a collective with other artists, generally at art fairs, or outdoor symposiums. Her work permanently resides in Galerie Z, a young contemporary Montreal gallery, hosting numerous organized events.
Artistic path
Influenced by graffiti and the pop art movement, Valerie’s pictorial subjects overflow with an energy that seems to move beyond the work itself. Constantly exploring new textures, Valerie experiments with different materials to create unique effects. Her paintings are mixed media; melding different techniques on the canvas, sometimes adding elements of stenciling. The manner in which Valerie applies the paint is important, and gives the canvas a vibrating aspect created by the speed of execution, permitted by the acrylic paint and aerosol. The superimposed colors and contrast give a balance and spontaneity within an atmosphere that may seem random, yet unified at the same time.
The subject is principal in her work but there always rests much more to be seen because of the visual depth of the piece. Blatant brush strokes, spots of paint, drips, runs, may be seen often. Their presence adds to the transparency and importance of the finished work. She’s more prone to apply the crayon, the spatula, and even a finger sooner than a brush on the canvas to witness the results. Her reflections are constant and the possibilities limitless in the evolution of her artistic world
