ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I am Dhumavati, the old woman, I can be your grandmother, yes I can! I’m not a beauty, as you might have expected. I am an elderly, widowed goddess, usually dressed in white or dirty rags. Do not be disappointed, but I am the one who will teach you through disappointment, pain and loss. My voice says: “all things shall pass”. I will give you the inner power to lift you up, nothing can stop you once we are determined. Finally, through me you will find the way to liberation. It is universally recognized that an event that at first may seem painful or unfortunate can later turn into a blessing – a blessing in disguise. Most of us know examples in our own lives or in the lives of those close to us: disappointments, misfortunes, frustrations, defeats or losses that led to a positive transformation. Similarly, life events can build character and transform an ordinary soul into an extraordinary one. An old myth tells us that Sati, the wife of Shiva, cursed by her husband to live as a widow, dies by burning and from her smoke I metamorphose myself, the great Goddess Dhumavati. Thus I, Dhumavati, came to embody the state of anger and humiliation that Sati had at the time of her death, and to exist as a continuation of the Goddess in the form of smoke; all that remains after the devastation. * This is a composition using the golden number, the sacred geometry- including the frame of the canvas. A simple presentation of the compositional elements of this artwork: My paternal grandmother used to hold her hands in a pose reminiscent of a painting, as seen in pictures. She remained a widow for over two decades. The background image depicts the village where I spent my childhood, a small village in northwest Romania(Sai). The photo was taken by me during the time when I still used a film camera. I kept this mysterious image without knowing it would find its place in one of my works! Grad I did that!

I'm a contemporary Romanian artist, creative and passionate of symbols and stories. I paint from my home studio in Bucharest, and also I'm teaching children the basics of visual art: shape, proportion, volume, shadow and light. I graduate University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca. Painting and practicing yoga for several years, I tried to find a simple way to associate symbols found in mythology and folklore for a visual that is easy to decipher for the modern human. I always find support in decoding and bringing to life the symbols by using ''The Dictionary of Symbols'' by Alain Gheerbrant and Jean Chevalier. This book is always present in my art studio. The compositions revel symbols and stories based on dreams, signs of life, and memories, transferred on canvas in a decorative way with great attention to details.
