Nostalgia Painting

As a boy, I watched a lot of westerns, at the theaters and on tv. As I grew up and thought about our fascination with western heroes and the multiplicity of things they say about western culture, I considered the darker and cynical aspects of the media's portrayal of cowboys and cowboy culture. Thinking creatively and connecting a few dots that might not otherwise come mind. The faceless cowboy is a motif that I conceptualized long ago (and may have been appropriated by a famous cartoonist). Out of the blue, I conceived of the idea of combining the Zen principles of the cycles of futility brought about our endless longing for a time and a hero that never really happened. The final result is the bicycle wheel that symbolizes our recycling of fantasies nested in the cardboard cut-out of Hollywood mythologizing.
