Now That Painting

I begin with something tangible and representational. Something traditionally thought of as beautiful. Something decorative. Ribbons adorn and celebrate. Ribbons are also used so often to signify many different issues and concerns. But this is just a starting point. I push it and mix it up. I add more and more. I tangle and entwine. I play with positive and negative space. Are we in celebration or turmoil? Is this excessive or fabulous? Are we in a calm zone or a confusing zone? Is it all of the above? Coexistence of oppositional forces. By building up and adding more, enhancement moves toward obliteration. Is this a lot of a good thing or too much of a good thing? Or is there even a difference? What begins as an exploration of something real transforms into something symbolic and bewildering.
