About The Artwork

This painting is inspired by my own attempts to run away from myself. It captures a person who is in denial, of themselves, of their memories, of their emotions, of their mind. It speak to that age old saying of a dog chasing its own tail. There is a violent pull on the psyche that tries to break free of itself. If we push or pull at our experience we only empower the opposite action. If we regard ourselves as systems made of many parts then it is fair to say that if there is pressure on one part of a system, there is bound to be pressure on the overarching system. We cannot successfully scapegoat any part of ourselves without condemning ourselves at the same time. This painting has been inspired by the book “The Body Keeps the Score” by Bessel Van Der Kolk, M.D. I moved with my body during the violent provocation from my memories during the sporadic event that created this painting. I wanted there to be a primacy evident in the painting, owing to unmixed colors, smearing into each other, rough textures reaching out from the canvas, calling the viewer to follow the trail of breadcrumbs into the darkness. This painting is best classified as abstract expressionism, informed by the work of Pollock.

Matteo’s art revolves around identity, the integration and disintegration thereof. Given his international background, fragments of self are found in places separated by oceans of difference in cultural attitude and identity. His search for belonging is clearly apparent as well as his sense of being a constant nomad of the global cultural landscape. His work is an attempt to reconcile the fragments of his own identity inspired by cultural differences that have a history of rejecting one another. His work ranges from abstract to figurative to experimental to outright primal. He considers himself a ‘messy’ artist, existing in a multiplicity of artistic personas that channel his being through their rampant creations. “In all chaos there is a cosmos, in all disorder a secret order” - Carl Jung
