About The Artwork

This piece is a playful combination of two of modern art's masters of appropriation. It is painted on 1.5 in deep artist board. This painting began as a basic recreation of Andy Warhol's famous portrait of Jackie Kennedy with some loose concept of altering it. After screenprinting, painting and leaving it for a day or so, the concept seemed to present itself. Initial ideas were to simply screenprint the word Media in Helvetica across her forehead. After pouring over images of Prince's nurses, with their drippy overpainting and perfect mesh of inkjet and acrylic, I was convinced this would be the right direction. So what does it mean? Is it a simple nod to two major influences? Perhaps the choice of Jackie in a nurse outfit is a grim reminder of the haunting events of JFK's assassination. Or could it be that pairing one of the most beloved first ladies with the aesthetic of the risque 1960's pulp images Prince basis his Nurse paintings on was too good to pass up? Its probably a combination of all of those things.

Alexander Key is an emerging contemporary artist from Charlotte, North Carolina. His work appropriates a wide variety of cultural ephemera, extracting familiar aesthetics and re-contextualizing them into new compositions that act as bittersweet commentaries. Mining from the resonance of childhood images and personal nostalgia, he explores the impact of these mental keepsakes on a broader collective memory. Working primarily in the medium of silkscreen printing, his work ranges from monotone prints to densely layered paintings. Please reach out if you are interested in showing his work or want to know more about his artistic practice.
