About The Artwork

From a series called Surfer Slang. The painting titles are common terms in surfer speak, and the abstract patterns describe the negative space within and between the letters that spell out the title. This painting is unique in the group in that it's a diptych, meaning it is one painting made up of two side-by-side canvases. The overall dimension is 36 by 36 inches. These two phrases are synonymous. "Off the top" and "hit the lip" both describe a surfer shooting up to the top of a breaking wave and doing a quick turning or pivoting move, and then sailing back down onto the face of the wave. The heavy black handwriting shows how the title "OFF THE TOP" is spelled out in negative space in the painting's geometric pattern. ("HIT THE LIP" is spelled out on the right panel). To be clear, the black lettering is NOT part of the painting, it's just added here to help you understand how the phrase fits into the painting's geometric pattern. The detail photo shows the rich, textured surface created by both adding paint, and also scraping or sanding the upper layers of paint.

Brooke is an artist with the knowledge and experience to produce significant paintings that are enlivened by direct experience, and strengthened by timeless qualities. BROOKE ROGERS IS A PAINTER from Ocean City, MD. He went to college in suburban Chicago, and then studied with Grace Hartigan at the Maryland Institute in Baltimore, but he ended up back at the beach where he started. Brooke has exhibited widely up and down the Mid-Atlantic, including solo shows in New York, Washington, and Richmond. His first museum show was at the Academy Art Museum in Easton, MD, a premier regional contemporary art venue with a national scope. BROOKE'S EARLY EXPERIENCE of nature was framed by material culture. A surfboard, after all, is an abstract sculpture. Wetsuits and surf apparel in the New Wave1980’s were covered with colorful patterns. He virtually grew up in a surf shop. On the other hand, his father was a Baptist preacher. Church gave him a sense of the sacred in everything and everyone around him.
