I created this piece, "Our Lady of COVID," during the challenging times of the pandemic. Living in solitude, I found solace and inspiration in the rain, the sky, animals, and nature—my only physical connections. The artwork was sparked by a striking photograph of soldiers on horseback in India, donning helmets adorned with bright red COVID cells. They used these helmets as a warning to stay isolated and safe. That powerful image stayed with me, leaving a lasting impact. This woman could be a soldier, warrior, or saint. The crosses in the background hold multiple meanings. They could symbolize a pattern, a red cross logo representing the tireless work of medical professionals, or the anguish of those facing uncertainty in hospitals. To me, they represented the countless lives lost and still affected, like stars filling the night sky. Pouring my emotions into this piece, I hoped to convey the complexity of the pandemic experience. My wish is for viewers to connect with the emotions I felt—to reflect on the value of human connection, the resilience of humanity, and the significance of every life affected by this unprecedented time. This acrylic on stretched canvas artwork is ready to hang.
