Art Description

Painting: Acrylic, Gesso, Gouache on Soft (Yarn, Cotton, Fabric).

Extra large "pliage" acrylic painting. Work inspired in the color of the Southern California coast after dawn. Created after a visit to the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 2013 and studying Simon Hantai paintings. The black denim fabric was folded, tied, scrunched, then doused with color, and unfolded. My folding approach was somewhat different to Simon Hantai, I used a dark and flexible denim, a porous fabric, instead of a white rigid, untreated canvas Hantai frequently used. I impressed the fluidity of the ocean on the piece coating the surface of the fabric with white Gesso tying and folding the fabric, creating rectangular spaces resembling a tableau. This painting was selected as part of a 3 month solo exhibit at the Long Beach Public Library in Southern California. Many people have now enjoyed the stretched piece, but you can see it also how it came out originally as a butterfly sculpture. Art work is 44 x 73 x 3 inches mix media (gesso, pastel and acrylic paint) on denim fabric. Gallery-quality, framed on wooden stretch bars.
