One of a pair of studies in oil during different seasons. Near Roehampton Gate in Richmond Park is an area where grass is mown and people stroll and picnic. Close to the perimeter road one finds this view of a young tree planted near a much older specimen. During the autumn of 2018 the grass which had been burned yellow in the summer recovered to fresh green growth. Fallen leaves carpeted the grass beneath the trees. This painting was created in the morning, looking east with the light from the south. I felt I could see golds, coppers, mauves and butter yellows amongst the turning leaves. In the distance the line of trees drew from the same palette . The younger tree has a more erect branch structure, and slightly more red copper hues. The texture and density of the foliage was very different from the mature tree. The contrast between the characteristics of the two neighbouring trees was the inspiration for the initial summer study, and was equally apparent here.. After a hot dry summer, the autumn brought wet windy days. Thick clouds scudded across the sky, rain refreshed the landscape and strong winds dislodged the leaves.

My work is primarily figurative – landscapes, portraits and narrative paintings in oil, acrylic and gouache. I never tire of the challenge of rendering a subject in a ‘realistic’ manner whilst at the same time weaving in a story, mood and personality to the piece. In the more narrative compositions, I have attempted to invite the viewer to construct the ‘story’ in their own minds from the content of the picture. My portraits seek by use of pose, composition, colour and tone to give an understanding of the subject’s character beyond the physical likeness. In my landscapes I like to convey the atmosphere and mood of the environment, so the viewer ‘feels’ as much as ‘views’. I work in my garden studio in Kingston on Thames, and my work can be viewed at ricksmithart.webnode.com
