About The Artwork

At the confluence of the two seas Martina Corgnati It might seem strange, but this path for renewal passes through Black Africa where Ali Hassoun goes to visit his sister (who has moved to Gabon) and where he encounters a world which, to his eyes, seems multicoloured, fascinating, and naturally endowed with class and taste. And so his paintings began to be populated by black girls walking elegantly holding their children, women in the market, and above all female painters and decorators covering the world with traditional motifs (L’isola felice [The Happy Island]); or else they contained completely foreign elements: the various paintings called Omaggi a… [Tribute to…], A scuola da Piero [At Piero’s School], or the recent untitled works which merrily take over and reinterpret themes from Penck, Capogrossi, Haring, rather in the same spirit shown by Nedko Solakov in his brilliant and ironical project Art Collector, presented at the 2000 Lyons Biennale. Africa, this Africa, is the Wonderland, the land of colour and surprises. With a child’s enchanted and non-dogmatic eyes, the painter observes how road-artists, in Ghana or the Congo for example, find it quite natural to take over others’ images and use them just how they please, and to make any scene cohabit with any other, transforming everything into a kind of decorative joy, of free invention.

Ali Hassoun was born in Saida (Lebanon) in 1964. In 1982 he moved to Italy to continue his studies at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence. In 1992 he graduated from the city’s university with a degree in Architecture. He now lives and works in Milan. He has added Italian nationality to his Lebanese nationality, and has thus been able to fill in areas that were lacking in his own individual experience. The most easily identifiable theme of his painting is travel, contributing different experiences and visions. Ali Hassoun’s works seem to act as a pole of attraction for various cultures, which merge to create a new, richer culture. In opposition to the clash of civilzations, Hassoun wants to highlight the idea of “humanity”; a universal and spiritual feature that is common to all folks, and that always come first, before any political or religious division. The artist becomes a sort of cultural translator, and different traditions can coexist in the perfectly balanced space of his colourful paintings. Islamic and African characters are all caught in a game of smart quotations and indirect exchanges between the main action and the background.
