On the Ground They Crawl Unseen Painting

This painting is part of a series called 'Abundance', which celebrates the quantity and variety of life on earth. In this picture, the focus is on the small creatures that live on the ground amongst the grass - snails, frogs, mice, ladybirds, ants and others - very often unseen by us although they share our space. The huge, golden sun and the golden stems of grass fill most of the panel, leaving only a small, intimate space for the animals, which swarm over the stems and up into the light. The deep red on black background adds to the feeling of intimacy and concealment, as if the viewer is crouching in the grass, spying. Traditional techniques have been used, including hand ground egg tempera paint and water gilding on a gessoed oak panel. The gold has been burnished and the sun punched to create a sparkling effect, contrasting with the gleaming, flat stems of grass. The painting is signed and dated on the reverse and has a d-ring attached so that it is ready to hang.
