In Native American culture, white deer are actually seen as a powerful spiritual symbol. They're considered to be a "huge sign of prophecy – a sign from the great spirit that a major shift in their world was to come." This painting represents the feeling of a "quiet knowing" just before large shifts in our lives. Something that we know in our bones, but don't quite know how we know. So it's something that we haven't quite expressed just yet. I think this feeling requires stillness to connect with. So this piece was painted from that mindset in an attempt to create a moment of stillness for the view as well. And while the deer himself is still, I imagine him walking in the snow without making a sound, then pausing for a moment, sensing something in the distance. Though mostly painted with black and white, this piece also incorporates a bit of umber to add a little hint of warm to the snowy, abstract background.
