About The Artwork
My subject is an abandoned bomb shelter on Mare Island, a decommissioned US Navy base east of San Francisco, outside the City of Vallejo. The base hosts many unused buildings. Many are neglected and vandalized, some are unintentionally open to explore. It’s a fun site for realism painters and photographers interested in weathered surfaces. I was instantly attracted to this shelter’s broad, yellow bands, a rather uncommon color valued by this artist-explorer. Its worn cement walls shouted for attention and asked to be painted. How could I resist? My painting is on canvas board. It has a professional frame of 1.5 inch wide distressed white wood that complements my design. My title honors fabulous Dr. Strangelove (1964).
