This painting is done with a technique using multiple layers of paint. Each layer is manipulated with a sharp tool such as a large steel nail where it is scratched to develop fine lines or scars in the paint. Each layer is dried and then sanded down to bring out the layer of paint below. This technique creates depth in the painting.
