Painting, Acrylic on Canvas
Size: 32 W x 24 H x 0.5 D in
Painting began with using crumbled pieces of newspaper and gluing them to the canvas. I wanted the newspaper text to be somewhat visible through the painting to stress the importance of knowing what's going on in the world, and how it affects you in ways you may not even understand (such as this painting). I began to paint a stormy ocean on top of the newspaper, to signify the doomsday clock. Then I began to paint in 'patches' of warm colors as the sky, creating a contrast from the sea and the heavens. I took some paint tubes and began to squeeze and spray them onto the sky to create a sense of movement in the heavens, as if 'god was angry'. I then added newspaper cut into the shape of mountains to separate the sea and the sky. I drew the ridges and plant life on the mountains with marker. This work was inspired by an article I read in the newspaper pertaining to U.S. international affairs. I have no hopes for what viewers feel, other than I hope they feel something from this. I chose acrylic as a medium because it was the fastest-drying material that would allow me to get my ideas out quickly. All of my paintings typically fall into the abstract art style, as I paint in my worldview rather than realistically.
