My work is inspired by distressed surfaces found in the urban environment which have been stained or worn away over time by the organic process of nature and continuous, repeated actions of daily life. To me, this tells a story by revealing layers of the past and validating it’s authenticity. This painting attempts to embody the essence of urban industrial rawness. The clean lines over the worn, distressed background symbolize the next layer on humankind's timeline of progression – the modern technical age overlaying the past industrial era – as if to show where we're going while not forgetting where we've been. This piece is painted on finely constructed smooth birch panel with 1.5 inch black stained border and arrives ready to hang.

Originally from Mobile, Alabama (US), Phillip Livingston is a contemporary American artist in Greenville, South Carolina. Combining elements of typography, pop art and abstract expressionism, his paintings explore the relationship between nature and civilization. Inspiration comes from studying the raw aesthetic of urban decay – textures and marks that are a result of continuous daily activity and exposure to the elements, such as rust stained concrete walls, weathered signage, worn pavement, and surfaces in various states of transition, and how the 'new' overlaps the old. This juxtaposition reveals a constant state chaos and order and instills a unique sense of authenticity as it tells the never-ending story of nature and civilization. Phillip received a BFA in Graphic Design and Painting from the University of South Alabama, and completed his graduate studies in Art Direction at The Portfolio Center in Atlanta. Before becoming a full-time artist, he worked a multi year career in advertising as an art director and graphic designer.
