A tribute to a painting by Diego Velazquez during his second trip to Italy in 1650, which inspired Francis Bacon in the 20th century. This very famous portrait of the Pope is worthy of note for its risky range of colours, "red on red". As part of his pictorial evolution, his hand is much freer than at the beginning of his career. Here, Velazquez reinvents the colourist tradition of Titian and the Venetian school. His remarkable work was bound to inspire the artist, who was also passionate about colour. He proposes to forget the initial portrait and use oil paint to create an original semi-abstract landscape.
