ABOUT THE ARTWORK

'Penny Sunrise' is part of a series of paintings called 'Contemporary Icons', which took two years to complete. I collected portraits from the people I encountered in my everyday life and combined them with symbols, patterns and colours you might find in religious iconography. I wanted to question whether the halo had to be a holy symbol, or if it could be worn by people in my own life. 'Penny Sunrise' is painted on gold fabric. The fabric is visible throughout the painting - in particular as the halo. Metallic silver and gold paint echo traditional materials used in Icon Painting. The painting is peaceful and aims to conjure up a sense of femininity and creativity. The Moon is alluded to in the halo, the symbols in the background suggest a journey through life.

NICOLA WILTSHIRE (b.1987 UK) completed her BA at University of Westminster, London (2009) and her MFA at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Dundee (2015). Nicola observes the world through her paintings; using colour and shape to evoke the feeling of a place, person or experience. Images of walks and domestic interiors are amongst the themes used to create a quiet and uplifting space. Each painting begins with patterned fabric stretched over a wooden frame. Nicola draws in charcoal and makes her own oil paint using centuries-old techniques. The work is the result of an enchantment with colour, texture, materials and pattern, plus a celebration of art’s history.
