Painting, Acrylic on Canvas
Size: 24 W x 24 H x 0.6 D in
This work originated as a process exploration, guided by the following design objectives: 1. The use of texture alone as the foundation for achieving form and composition. 2. The use of directionality of textured gestures to create a sense of motion, movement, or flow. 3. The use of glazes laid on a highly textured white base layer to create visual texture / detail, as a result of the pigment in the glazes settling into the grooves, crevices, and troughs / valleys of the base layer. 4. The use of soft, floral, delicate.colors and hues, and the creation of a vague and poorly defined composition (as opposed to a well defined layout with distinct and discrete elements). What resulted from this exercise was the production of a work that is suggestive of a field or sea of particles that have been disturbed or perturbed, hence the title for the work. Alluding to electromagnetic fields, the imaginary "field" in this work is referred to humorously as the "electromagentic" field - a nod to both the word "electromagnetic" and the word "magenta". And, ironically, "electromagentic" and "electromagnetic" contain all the same letters and only differ from one another in the placement of the two adjacent letters "e" and "n". Appropriately, and deliberately, the regions of the "field" where the textured gestures are more aligned and less active are cooler in tone (blues and magentas), whereas the region in the middle, where the textured gestures are highly active and in motion and seemingly chaotic, is warmer in tone. The expression of the increased energy - the perturbation - resembles almost a fire.
