Slobodan Ivanković's art encompasses a broad palette of themes, primarily figures and interiors, as well as still lifes and landscapes. His mastery of colour, use of light and feeling for space enable him to confront the most demanding topics. Distinctive of his work are the interaction between colours and each painting's special ambience. Years ago, he developed his own unmistakable artistic patois, based on deliberate design, robust composition, a mastery of spatial dimension and a unique expression of stylistic variety, regardless of the theme. Fine arts underwent significant changes at the turn of the 20 century. Western European art, which sought to establish the narrative in tangibility, had passed through the phase of Modernism al- though Romanticism marked the beginning of the liberation of images. Artists were transformed from narrators to explorers and began searching in general. They began depicting man and nature differ- ently, not merely as seen at first glance but as they perceived them through their own eyes and in their own minds. Ivankovic, whose creativity is based on a decades-long and thorough investigation of the history of art, incorporates the material world in his artistic narratives. Although he draws on the tan- gible, he also plunges into his imaginary world, the spaciousness of his ideas, which he attempts to ex- press through his art. It is in this aspect that his freedom and directness of expression are illustrated. His creativity is drawn from culture, his academic period and personal quests and contemplations and contains much of the familiar, yet simultaneously entices us with the undiscovered. He addresses us with a special aesthetic charm, a convincing declaration and extreme sensitivity. His artistic orienta- tion is that of a realist - not in the sense of the early realists, however, but as a painter who marks his canvass with a hallmark testifying to a warm, human presence.
