About The Artwork
I find Patti Smith's biography fascinating, and her writing and songs are brilliant. I have made multiple portraits of her, and hope to be inspired by her freedom, boldness and authenticity. This portrait belongs to my Courageous Women series, which pays homage to great women. This piece is very layered, and a part from the drawing and painting of Patti Smith's features, I incorporate some of her verses, her family tree, and elements of her iconography such as photos of horses. The golden eagle feather in her hand represents her poetry and it is also a native american symbol of peace.
