About The Artwork

Obviously styled after the cubist movement, I painted this on primed hardboard. I purposely textured the structured forms and then painted the cloud forms and background without texture. This heightened the contrast. I spent considerable time modulating the color key, to restrain it overall. The reddish tone at the bottom is applied and then dragged off. Like Braque, Picasso and Juan Gris I painted a dark outline on most of the forms. I was intent on insuring that the slightly angled downward thrust from the top to the bottom was maintained, which, in my view enhanced the dramatic effect and the energy of the painting. The cubist movement is considered by a number of critics as the most sudden break, historically with traditional painting practices. Quite a number of my own paintings are influenced by this unique genre. This is a recent painting but I intend to seal, varnish and frame it prior to sell.

Born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona with three brothers. I contracted polio at age three and spent nine months in an iron lung. Had a miraculous healing and then during recovery spent hours and hours with paper and pencil provided by my mother. Studied under several artists in the Phoenix Valley including on site watercolor workshops, figure drawing and sculpture. In High School won several Gold Key awards and was a cast member for the T.V. series - Indispensables (series on youth in art). University of Arizona Fine Arts department and one semester at the Florence, Italy Academy of Art. After moving to California I built an art studio on our property in San Marcos. Studied on and off with Gifford Nicholaides in California, where we formed the Pastel Society. Married to Christina Wilson, three children and now seven grandchildren. Life is good!
