This is an image of the Canterbury Plains – well, the hills at the edge of the Canterbury Plains – at the end of summer. Everything’s parched, and the clouds in the sky, even if they rained, don’t carry enough water to relieve the drought. In painting this, I was trying to capture the feeling of a dehydrated countryside, desperate for moisture. After spending several hundred times longer than I should have, trying to get Lockdown Painting #13 (Start of the Loop Track) up to an acceptable standard, I was struggling to achieve my goal of completing a painting a day during the lockdown. However, the videoing and video editing take a fair amount of time, and everything just got later and later. So painting #14 is the magpie, which is not a complex composition, and #15, this painting, is a panorama – so half the size of the other paintings - to give me a bit of time to catch up.
