About The Artwork

Oval. Oil on wood panel. "Proserpina looks at us from the abyss: her long red hair waves on a dark drape, that may be seen as the metaphor of those infernal rivers that gush out from the black marsh and that the dead have to cross to reach the “weeping prairies”. Her locks create a crown around her face, recalling the snakes of the frightful Medusa, whose glance could petrify people, or the hair floating in the water belonging to Ofelia, who killed herself for love. However, the image lacks completely of pathos, as if the girl was proud of her condition, balanced on nothing, regally guarding the underground country of Hades, sharing the bed of a god, of a dark god, the lord of Hades, a proud and frightful Lord who tore her from her unaware youth and changed her into a queen, the lady of the mysterious and awful Hades. Our glance enters from above an unknown universe, that we are doomed to reach sooner or later, and from which only Proserpina can escape, every year, when spring spreads its fragrance and its sweetness on the hearth: we take a peek underground for a moment and, surprisingly, we do not see the tortures of sinners or the monsters of hell, the burning walls of Dite’s city, but the charming and smiling face of a lively and welcoming lady, who seems to invite us to join her". 2010, review by Vicenzo Farinella, professor of History of Modern Art at University of Pisa, Italy.

Giulia Quaresima is an Italian artist who lives and works in Cambridge, UK. Her artistic activity focuses on figurative subjects, particularly portraits and nudes. The women's universe is the main theme of her painting season: the relentless passage of time, the laceration of abandonment, the fascinating moment of conception are the subjects on which she reflects. She uses painting to analyse our fears and hopes, and her works do not hide behind intellectual games. The artist believes that her works can show her love for tradition and her respect for the craft, because, in her opinion, modernity should be find through the old rule of art. She is very faithful to the "poetic of realism" with which she carries on her own idea of reality. In her latest series, the artists reflects on the power of gesture and body language, and she tries to express feelings and emotions painting and drawings hands.
