Very often I use vintage black and white photos for my work. I look at a faded picture, see a face from a bygone era, and I'm already in the middle of another life. Is this person still alive? What has he experienced and how does he look today? It is the stories behind the pictures that interest me. Sometimes they are photos from my own family, then again motifs of strangers that I buy at the flea market or buy at auction on the Internet. Sometimes it is also pictures and faces from the newspaper that catch my attention. I cut out the photos and put them in a folder with other pictures. There they are stored until I pick them up again and give them a second life. I try to transfer these pictures into our time - with my colors, with my means. And through that, the people from memory come back to life. Looking back: It is like looking back into the past - not only into my own. And it is precisely this looking back into the past that is very important to me. To understand our time better, to understand myself.
