RAF Fylingdales Painting

This is a study of the Royal Air Force station Fylingdales on the North Yorkshire moors which forms part of the MOD's ballistic missile early warning system. The artwork is produced from my own photographic reference taken during an art trip to Whitby on the Yorkshire coast in autumn. The picture is painted over a neutral grey gesso ground with a palette knife. The colour is roughly mixed and vigorously applied in short strokes in a manner influenced by my two favourite painters, Vincent Van Gogh and Kyffin Williams. Cadmium orange is the key colour and flashes of it show throughout the whole composition even in the sky, unifying the whole and emphasizing the autumnal warmth on the moor. RAF Fylindales was painted, signed and dated on 13 March 2018.
