Rainbow Bird Painting

‘Rainbow Bird (Hanging in the Balance)’ was inspired by the birth of our daughter. It depicts the few days we spent in a Neonatal ICU, where she was placed in an induced coma to stop the brain seizures she was suffering as a result of suffocation during labour. She is the rainbow bird hovering in the inbetween communicating with a protective guardian spirit, represented by the large white bird. Meanwhile, we (her parents, the wolves) sat beside her incubator as she seizured, willing her recovery. I hope that this painting speaks to viewers who may have been through a similar experience, the twilight of intensive care units, a kind of limbo world. I wanted to communicate the peace, care and hope of these strange spaces, not simply the inevitable stress and anxiety. I chose to depict our experience in expressionistic symbolism so as not to be explicit and allow room for viewers to make there own interpretation of this painting, too.
