ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Influenced by a childhood spent among the flora and fauna of Trinidad in the Caribbean. The pink of the background represents bauxite - a natural resource on the island and one of my earliest memories of arriving there as a 5 year old. My family sailed to Trinidad when I was a child, as we entered the bay the first thing I noticed was the pink dust, then I fainted - the first of many childhood fainting spells.... This work, and others to follow signify a journey through childhood memories and fears, some of which have been overcome, others ongoing battles.... This painting is framed in a bespoke brass frame which has a natural patina.

Born into a somewhat nomadic family, Kari grew up in the Caribbean where she was exposed to many different avenues of creativity. Before graduating from the Ontario College of Art (1991) in Toronto, she spent her final year in the renowned Florence program, which has continued to inform her encaustic practice. Having recently returned to Toronto from another year abroad, one of both global significance and personal resonance, her work has shifted once again to examine the human condition through animal portraiture with equal parts intensity and empathy.
