About The Artwork

This painting includes my own designed cedar wood frame, handcrafted by artisan/sculptor Tomas Batista. This frame has come to be a trademark of my work, since it accompanies all of my paintings. Inspiration: This is a portrait of a friend, called Totoño. He still has a Picture Framing Shop in Old San Juan. At the time when this picture was created, the Pop Art (Hard Edge) movement was happening in New York USA. I did my own interpretation of this international style with influences of the local Puerto Rico’s rich culture and folklore, in what I latter called, “Pop Art Criollo” (“Creole Pop Art”). Choice of Medium: I was formally trained in the classic use of oils and have always been fascinated by how it behaves organically. Although I have worked with acrylics, watercolors and such, my preferred choice of medium has always been OILS.

(Artist signs as: DOMINGO or GARCIA) Domingo was born April 20, 1932. He initiated his art studies at the National Academy of New York USA and later at the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois USA. In 1952 he traveled to London UK where he studied for a period of five years with renowned painter and colorist, William Locke. In 1957, Domingo decided to move to Puerto Rico from New York City, where he was already consider a prominent painter. Once in Puerto Rico, Domingo reconciled with the artistic movement of the island, and became not only a pioneer (painting, sculpture and printmaking) but also a promoter of the arts. By means of his participation in individual and collective exhibitions, his work brought the attention of serious art collectors and quickly became recognized by world’s art critics. In the year 1958, he established the influential Campeche Gallery in Old San Juan, where he and other of the most out-standing local artists of the period exhibited their works. There also, Domingo taught art classes (drawing and painting) to new art students and emerging artists. In 1972, he received among other prestigious awards the Guggenheim Foundation Scholarship in painting. In 1988, Domingo founded the Latin-American Art Gallery, in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, which promptly became an important cultural space and center for the arts. Domingo’s career has expanded to more than seven decades and has exhibited both locally and internationally. Domingo is also represented by several major world museums. In 2011, Domingo was honored at a private reception for his contribution to Latin American Arts at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. Simultaneously the renowned institution announced the adquisition and addition of two (2) of Domingo's masterpieces: 'Adios Mahatma' and 'La Mujer Criolla” to their permanent Latin American collection. At the present time, Domingo is working on his next solo show “70th Year Retrospective”.
