Soak up the feeling of being by the river just after dawn on a cool, misty morning. It's when the whole world seems to pause, waiting to get up. Stillness is everywhere. This was the same morning as River Thames at Dawn #1, displayed elsewhere on this site but this is a little earlier and a couple of hundred metres downstream. I had been searching for the perfect view of the Thames and, one week in November, every morning was like this. Each day I kept walking until I the sun was high and the mist burned away and eventually I found the perfect spot which showed the course of the river, the whole of the valley and how modern life was intruding on the older landscape. During that quest, I gathered enough photos, sketches and notes about colour to make maybe thirty paintings. So far, I've only made a few, of which this is one. I will do more, but only when I've headed back to refresh my memory about the colours. As with all my paintings, this is made from top quality materials - in this case professional grade oils on heavy cotton canvas. The piece is framed in ultra-slim aluminium box moulding with a tiny shadow gap. The frame is dark grey with a slight texture. It has picture cord on the back and is ready to hang.

Alan is an artist based in Surrey. From his studio in Staines-upon-Thames, he paints landscapes, investigates whatever catches his attention and is currently prototyping some top secret & beautiful things. He trained at Farnham and has shown in many open and group shows throughout London and the South East, has had one major solo show and has been artist in residence for a manor house in Buckinghamshire. His work is in many private collections. “A high proportion of my work is the local landscape. Initially this was nothing but a combination of convenience and a long term fascination with the depiction of space, but as I have dug deeper it has begun to act as a proxy for more personal ideas.”
