Rock Garden: Fire, Air, Water, Earth Painting

The idea for "Rock Garden" began at my dentist's office. While I was waiting at the receptionist desk to schedule my next appointment, I saw on the counter a miniature Japanese sand garden, complete with a tiny shovel. When I began making furrows in the sand with the shovel, I knew I had to create a piece with the same ridges and texture. I found these stones in my studio, built the ridges and furrows surrounding them with gesso, which I later painted, and "Rock Garden" resulted. The stones' colors influenced the "Fire, Air, Water, Earth" theme.
