About The Artwork

Place “…there are some novel place settings, fanatic readers try to pinpoint where they are and are often unsuccessful. Other times, there are novel place settings inspired by real places; here, readers try to find cues from books they enjoy” says Umberto Eco. Aren’t paintings like that also? Some settings, despite their reality, don’t let us in, they keep us out. Others, evoke the desire to find things in the spectator that accepts it, even though they know it is fiction. Those fictional environments first take root in our desire to believe, then become legends over time in our own images. The roots of belief stretching deep into those fictional settings which captivate us with their believability, start looking for their legends in the deep labyrinths of images. Time The owl also had its fair share of ambiguous roles in antique mythology. In Greek mythology the owl traditionally symbolises Athena, it is the symbol of wisdom and ambition. In Native American culture, if someone responds with a whistle similar to an owl’s and doesn’t get a response, it is believed that he or she will soon pass away. The owl, in the duality of wisdom and light, death and darkness is “the blind one” with its tameness during daytime and the “guardian of darkness” with its night vision. The shift of the “guardian of darkness” starts with the darkness gaining depth. The sinister darkness comes down in such a way, that even the mighty gust of wind looking for its birthplace can’t find its way. And it will never be able to find it due to its nature, because that place is the unreturnable land. Because of this, it takes shelter in the grand, deepening darkness of the valley. If it can’t find the valley, it will hide in the nook of a desolate road and go to sleep. Afterwards everywhere becomes quiet. And the time of silence is endless. This is why both silence and darkness erase all traces of time with nightfall...

Hello all! My name is Caner Karavit. I was born in Edirne and raised in Ankara. Currently, I live in Istanbul. Journey of my artistic outlook could be periodized in two stages. First, the contemporary art-related performances, paintings and printmakings that I executed with domestic and foreign art groups. This period corresponds to my higher art education at Istanbul Fine Arts Academy. In both group performances and individual works, the influence of the Western contemporary art, that I was provided during my art education, was intense. The themes of my Western-style contemporary art works were contributed by the layers of the cultural geography in which I was raised. Second stage is deeply affected by the Chinese art, on which I had education from 2007 on in China. During the first years of my presence in China, in Tsinghua University that I worked with a scholarship, I studied woodcut which is one of the oldest arts in China. In following years, I did research on Chinese Buddhist art and took lectures from Liu Hanshi who is a renowned Chinese painting master. These works and studies of mine rendered me with a comparison between the Western and Eastern art, and a synthesis of them both. Studying both of the artistic waves, not only I observed the differences in use of materials but also the differences in mindsets, with their artistic elements and installations. Accordingly, my studies in China changed my perspective towards the composition. The Chinese philosophy of time and space that influenced Chinese art, in turn predominantly influenced the abovementioned change in my understanding of composition. In this context, focusing on element of line, I reflect the places inversed to convert Chinese concept of time into space.
