About The Artwork

About the theme This ‘Rest of the Austrian Navy’ is a surrealistic, apparently romantic and deliberately ambiguous evocation of stranded battleships in a rolling landscape. It is an allegory about the nostalgic yearning for the restoration of fallen hegemonic Empires and the resurgence of European nationalism. About the technique In the foregrounds, very thin layers of opposite primary colours are crossed on the rough but regular weft to produce an optical vibration. This pixel effect is opposed to the more blur and homogeneous layers of the background which accentuates the impression of relief. The technique is inspired by the stereoscopic images that were developed in the fifties. It is complementary to the use of the perspective, the confrontation between chromatic cold and warm colours, and the use shades. About the installation Optimization of the artificial lighting. Several small LED spotlights positioned above the painting with an adaptable illumination angle and colour temperature (ideally 3000°K CRI 90), aiming a homogeneous lighting of the surface will optimize the high optical qualities of this painting. The best quality of acrylic painting has been used to guarantee the longevity of the work. Nevertheless, direct sunshine on the picture, hanging above a heating coil should be avoided to prevent colour fading. Shipping The canvas will be rolled up packed and sent in a cardboard tube without stretcher bars. Custom-sized frame + horizontal and vertical subdivision must be provided by the customer. Note that the original frame is based on standard measures using the metric system. On customer's request we can also send the dismounted painting with the original stretcher bars. See Saatchi for shipping costs. On demand, we can provide an inverted L profile picture frame (see picture). Extra costs and delivery period should be discussed.

Denis van Baren is a French-Dutrch artist born in Paris on the 11th of September 1968. He first trained as an architect and specialized in the preservation and restoration the architectural heritage. He practiced this activity on the highest level in Brussels for two decades. Since 2011, he devotes himself exclusively to his painting. van Baren draws since his early childhood, and first developed his skills in the watercolour technique. This has a considerable influence on his actual acrylic paintings, especially in the balance between light and shade. His architectural training as well as important personal research contributes to a very original representation of space and his experience to conserve the artistic heritage also confers to his work a particular philosophical dimension where time and memory play a central role. Through different series, he approaches the theme of memory.
