About The Artwork

The legend has it… In Lithuania, on the shores of the Baltic Sea, stood an ancient fishermen's village. Here men through the centuries inherited the skill for fishing as their very lives depended on it. One late afternoon the fishermen, preparing to sail, sang lustily: ‘O sea of beauty why do you roar? Why do you sigh? Are you expecting guests?’ They sang on, their silver nets spread wide: they will snare a mermaid, a water sprite of the green sea. For their sisters or their loved ones they will bring back pearls of amber and golden fish… In the distance, the Goddess of the Sea Jurate raised from the sea intently listening to this song and come towards one fisherman Kastytis. Bewitched by her beauty, Kastytis was speechless... Jurate sang "Kastytis, forget your earthly dreams, a beautiful new world awaits you." Recovering from his awe, he asked Jurate: "Who are you? Where do you come from?" Jurate replied softly: „The winds bend at my command, and at my word turbulent becomes the sea. I rule the green sea — and I love you, Kastytis." Dazed by these wordless words, and such beauty, Kastytis was exhilarated as by fiery wine. He was bewildered by Jurate's expression of love. Was this real, or was it a dream? The whole world seamed passionately aflame… Jurate and Kastytis descended into the sea and married in Jurate’s amber palace. …From the distance came a clap of thunder. It rolled in closer and louder… The Sea Winds warned Jurate, Perkunas The God of Thunder is threatening a horrible revenge because she, a Sea Goddess, dared to love a mortal. Only a God should have been her choice. She could avert his wrath only if she renounces her love for Kastytis, and he returns to earth! Jurate raised from her throne, came forward and proclaimed: "Winds! My brothers! I do not fear the threats of the Gods! What can they do to me when my heart is filled with the fire of love? I rule the sea! Winds, my fleet ones! Tell the Gods: Jurate loves a son of the earth." Kastytis to Jurate: "If we are to die, we shall perish together." The Gods send down their wrath. Kastytis and Jurate stood ready to meet death. The Sea Winds once more warned Jurate that death is near. But Jurate had no fear of dying with her beloved. With one last, violent clap of thunder, lightening shattered the amber palace. Jurate covered Kastytis with her own body and fell struck by lightning to death… The ravages of the storm leaved Kastytis deeply desolate… He took Jurate to an old wise man living in the dunes. Together they arranged a pagan ritual to bring Jurate back. They covered her in honey and asked the bees to bring back her life in exchange for the liquid amber… Here in my painting, Jurate opens her eyes again, stretches herself and inhales the air of the dry-land unknown to her before. Her every sense is for the first time now. She feels the wind touch her hair, she dreams of flowers, she’s hungry for love. She is reborn as a maiden of Earth. In peace. :) Please, leave the comment if you love the story. :)

Salvinija Bentke (1976) was born in Vilnius, Lithuania in a family of mathematicians. She studied architecture in Stuttgart University and Vilnius Technical University where completed her PhD in Architecture with the topic on the Image of the City. “My path to the colourful expression started so many years ago, when my now-a-grown-up daughter was just a baby. We rolled out a huge sheet of paper on the floor and draw whatever came on our mind. My baby loved it best if it was some bright familiar things, so I contoured thick the pieces of success and added some shading to make them even more visible and outstanding. Sometimes the little child would try to pick it up, and this would make us laugh out loud a lot. “When she grew up a bit we continued to draw together. We’d name the topic and both of us would draw on it, looking into the workings of each other and copying from each other whatever details and techniques we liked. Our attempts moved from paper to canvas and clay, and one day the separation happened. Here you see the works that happen solo for me, for now. Who knows, our paths might still converge one day again. :) “My hero is an urban animal, a stranger in the wilderness who wants to be assimilated. I love to throw him into the most peculiar situations and watch his inner constitution collide with the unknown and unfamiliar. “Nature is the place to cool down. Yet this world is so full of desire, all kinds of sorts of impatience, willingness to get deeper into the experience. It does not matter there if you can mouth up the bite of that size. The pure pleasure in feeling your own existence is all that matter. "Whatever comes can be made for the better," says Salvinija, "I trust the world to be a happy place worth of celebration." She lives and works in Lithuania as an artist and an architect.
