SPIRALED Painting

This small format painting has been done on Japanese paper which has a different texture than normal watercolor paper, it is soft, smooth, and of an ivory color. Black Japanese ink was applied with a calligraphy brush, other two colored inks were added in order to give the piece contrast and balance. On the upper left side a small wooden square was placed, the main subject being a spiral the square is there to give the thought of changes in our paths, sometimes we circle or spiral our ways and then life presents us with unexpected changes as well as challenges. Personally, working with black ink, handling the brush to obtain different intensities in each stroke lets me express and share my feelings, everyday experiences as well as thoughts. After a long ten year period of working with Pre Hispanic themes, I came upon change, one that has sent me in search of more tranquility, less visual and auditive noise, reflection, and to a slower pace. The way black Japanese ink is soaked up by the natural hair brushes, how it flows on soft surfaces, how the paper reacts to the dampness of the ink is a way to achieve that purpose.
