About The Artwork

From a series called Surfer Slang. The painting titles are common terms in surfer speak, and the abstract patterns describe the negative space within and between the letters that spell out the title. Check out the detail photos to see the titular phrase and how it fits into the painting's geometric pattern. A surf shop is more than just a place to buy board shorts. For young surfers it's where "the family you choose" is found. I virtually grew up in my local shop. Surfers compete on their surf shop's team and feel a fierce sense of loyalty to their crew. The heavy black handwriting shows how the title "SURF SHOP" is spelled out in negative space in the painting's geometric pattern. (note: The word "SURF" is right side up, and then "SHOP" is upside down). To be clear, the black lettering is NOT part of the painting, it's just added here to help you understand how the phrase fits into the painting's geometric pattern.

BUYING A PAINTING from Brooke Rogers means you are acquiring a work of art with meaningful connections to both the artist's identity as a free individual, and to any number of veins running through the history of art. Brooke is an artist with the knowledge and experience to produce significant paintings that are enlivened by direct experience, and strengthened by timeless qualities. BROOKE ROGERS IS A PAINTER from Ocean City, MD. He went to college in suburban Chicago, and then studied with Grace Hartigan at the Maryland Institute in Baltimore, but he ended up back at the beach where he started. Brooke has exhibited widely up and down the Mid-Atlantic, including solo shows in New York, Washington, and Richmond. His first museum show was at the Academy Art Museum in Easton, MD, a premier regional contemporary art venue with a national scope. BROOKE'S EARLY EXPERIENCE of nature was framed by material culture. A surfboard, after all, is an abstract sculpture. Wetsuits and surf apparel in the New Wave1980’s were covered with colorful patterns. He virtually grew up in a surf shop. On the other hand, his father was a Baptist preacher. Church gave him a sense of the sacred in everything and everyone around him.
