About The Artwork

The sacred symbols in our lives, our faith and religious beliefs spread across our world are the contextual reality behind “Sacred Symbols”, an acrylic on canvas work. Sacred and symbolic religious forms from different cultures of Africa, Asia, Europe, South and North America, the Middle East and other Arabian Peninsula were represented because of their sacredness and significance. Amongst these formally depicted sacred symbols are Ifa divination tray and Ose Sango (Sango: Yoruba god of thunder and lighting, dance wand or thunder axe) from Yoruba/Africa traditional religion. The Star of David for Judaism and Jews, the Yin and Yang belonged to the Chinese. The Buddha seated in the lotus position with a scale for Karma behind him symbolizes Buddhism which exist in India, China and most part of Asia and other parts of the world. Shinto gate-like form is from the Japanese culture, and Hindu’s dancing Shiva Nataraja is from Indian socio-religious essence. The cross represents Christianity while the crescent and star symbolize Islam, two globally accepted religions. Some other suggested motifs and forms like the wavy lines at the lower part of the painting symbolizes the up and down of life or the rise and fall of man from Yoruba/African traditional beliefs. There is a suggested dark bird to represent the witches, and other dark forces. A benign gray scarf dances around the cross and travel across the painting touching all the sacred symbols in the work as a symbolic Divine approval of the different faiths and cultures as well as a pointer of the need for improvement on their shady parts because no religion or culture is perfect. Sacred Symbols is about Divine presence and respects for our morally sound religious and other sociocultural vows because Satan is forever lurking in our shadow trying to derail us to hell.
