About The Artwork

"Salmon Patrol" was first inspired by a Discovery Channel program about a group of salmon and the challenges they face. The salmon in this painting (you can't see them, but they really are there) have been living out at sea for a year or two getting big and fat. This painting means to suggests that they have now returned to the same river where they were born. But this time they are going in the opposite direction. They are now fighting upstream against the current, trying their best to make it back to their spawning grounds. Sadly for many of these salmon, the struggle to get upstream is too much, and they end up becoming easy prey for some very hungry Grizzly Bears who have their own issues to deal with. Hibernation time is coming soon, and they are very hungry. But beneath the pleasant image of this painting a very disturbing message can be found. It's a message that I hope will come to the surface through paintings like this one. To most people, in real life the pleasant view is all they really see, or care to see. They do not realize that the salmon and bear populations are in crisis. Due to overfishing and climate changes, the salmon population has been severely reduced. Consequently, the Grizzly Bears are having a difficult time finding enough food to get them through their hibernation. Researchers tell us that 100,000 tons of salmon are still being illegally fished each year. Already, 106 breeds of salmon are now extinct. And the impact of this on the bear population is frightening. Bears are no longer able to meet their food supply quotas for hibernation, which is leading to their starvation. My hope is that paintings like "Salmon Patrol" will help in bringing about a greater awareness of this growing problem.
