About The Artwork

This work, completed in 2019, is a self-portrait from reference material dating back to the early 80s, illustrating my US Marine Corps enlistment as a resident alien shortly after my arrival in the United States. To my left is fellow-Marine, "Manny", a Cuban immigrant. This was our path to US citizenship. This work is a tribute to the thousands of Latino immigrants that served in the US armed forces, their many contributions, sacrifices, and ultimately their path to citizenship. I included Mexicans within the title as they comprised the largest number of foreign nationals within the units I served. The helmets have symbolic representations; the word Peregrino, pilgrim, written on my helmet, as well as the Aztec bird symbolizing Strength and Courage synonymous with Marine Corps virtues. Concealed within Manny's helmet camouflage-pattern, the map of Latin America, depicting our migratory pattern to our new home. Many of us came to serve this great nation in exchange for a better life, some of us, escaping violence and seeking peace; as well as, the many opportunities America provides for those who dare follow their dreams, and love her.

Although oils are my primary medium, I love to experiment with a diverse set of mediums and styles. While my works are continually evolving in style and subject matter, the characters within my figurative works reflect a global community, as the human form occupies the central motif of most of my paintings, and within the figure, I give a voice to our humanity. My works are in private and public collections. Through the years my works have been exhibited in the United States, Colorado statewide events, and featured in the US on “Artist CloseUp Magazine, Volume #2”, “Studio Visit Magazine, Volume 51 &52”. On April 5, 2023, I was awarded the Price “The Universal Artist” at the National Museum of Science and Technology Leonardo da Vinci in Milan, Italy. My work “Bathsheba” oil on canvas, 36” x 48”, (91,44 x121,92 cm) was selected and published in the 2023 encyclopedic editions of “Contemporary Celebrity Masters Vol. II.” And the “5th International Prize, Leonardo Da Vinci edition: The Universal Artist”
