The highly textured abstract expressionist paintings in this series are a reflection of the natural world, skirting the line between landscape and abstraction. I am drawn to surfaces altered by time; old walls, ancient frescos, the landscape itself, aged and eroded. My process is completely intuitive, beginning with applying several layers of color, then reworking the canvas, allowing it to evolve, sometimes for many months. I will often take off as much paint as I put on before arriving at something that feels interesting and true. Although there is an intense dialogue between myself and the painting as it develops, in the end it is not about me. My hope is to create something that will resonate with the viewer, and unlock a bit of their own spirit. The paintings are intended to bring this mood to its surrounding space and viewers, creating a unique atmosphere with its presence.

Skillicorn, based in New York and Massachusetts, has been creating luminous abstract paintings for over twenty years. He explores complex spatial and color relationships through the use of texture, organic line, and sensuous fields of color. Often mixing in elements of the physical landscape directly into the paint -- sand, field grasses, bits of flora -- he infuses the work with the presence of the natural world. In mixed media works on canvas, Skillicorn creates sophisticated, intuitive paintings alive with surface texture, lush paint of vibrant colors in bold strokes over atmospheric passages. David Skillicorn's life as a visual artist began with extensive work with video in the late 1970's, leading to an earlier career as a multiple Emmy award-winning documentary filmmaker. His visual vocabulary deepened through those years while filming more than a million images across a wide spectrum of cultures and landscapes in more than forty countries. His intensive experiences filming the textures of culture, color and landscape throughout the world have had a lasting impact on his visual sensibilities and inform the unique visual language he has brought to his work as an abstract painter for the past twenty years. Skillicorn shows his work regularly at galleries throughout the United States, and has exhibited in a number of solo and juried group exhibitions nationwide. His paintings are part of innumerable public and private collections throughout the country, including Johns Hopkins, Regent Hotel, Intel, Northern Trust Bank and many others. Curators who have selected Skillicorn’s paintings for inclusion in juried exhibitions include: Carl Belz Director Emeritus The Rose Art Museum Brandeis University Ian Berry Curator Tang Art Museum Saratoga Springs NY Julie Burros Chief of Arts and Culture, City of Boston Mim Brooks Fawcett Director Attleboro Arts Museum Adrian Tio Dean of College of VIsual Arts Umass Dartmouth Jessica Roscio Curator of the Danforth Art Museum Lisa Crossman Curator, Fitchburg Art Museum Beth Urdang Beth Urdang Gallery, Boston Marni Elyse Katz Art curator/author Leonie Bradbury Director of Art and Creative Initiatives, Boston
