About The Artwork

Sea and Sympathy Genealogy Series 2019: Photography and Mixed media on canvas 20” x 20” My grandmother was a force. When the drivers went on strike at her Michigan dairy in the early 50’s, she climbed up on the truck herself and told them to get out of the way or she’d have to run them over. I recall her wearing white go-go boots, long colorful fingernails, and a beehive hairdo by the time she was living in California twenty years later. She had polio as a kid, so one of those shoes had an orthopedic aid, and she limped every day of her life, not slowing her down a bit. She was an excellent cook, although she hated doing it and so only did it on big holidays. As far as I could tell, my grandmother lived on the yellow lemon drop candies that sat in crystal dishes on her coffee tables, Lay’s potato chips, and 7up. She “never drank,” but would down a quarter of a bottle of Nyquil at night “to get some sleep.” I remember sitting under her B3 organ and watching those white go-go boots fly across the pedals, as she played what they called then Popular Standards, though let’s just admit it, the woman introduced a 3 year old to straight ahead jazz. I can still imagine the sound of Billie Holiday on the organ with that clickety-clack sound of her fingernails on the keys.

If you fell down a flight of stairs and really got hurt, physically, something else (non-physical) might also happen. You might see a great White Light. You might hear what they call a “hypnagogic” sound. Imagine the rumbling of an earthquake. Imagine the cacophony of a symphony tuning up. Imagine a million different voices speaking at once. Now combine those sounds. Okay, you’re close. Weave them all together by increasing the sound of your own internal frequency, your tinnitus, that high-pitched ringing that’s always there and you never noticed it before, but now the volume is really turned up. All together, now, that’s it. Physically, you’d be different too, truth be told. You might even feel the kind of white hot pain that really cracks you open. You might find yourself feeling lighter but also extra sensitive to electricity, Wifi, even other people. Mentally, you might even dislodge from the body, disassociate from your “normal” state of mind. Something strange might happen to you, even if you’d never believed in this kind of stuff before, and suddenly you OPEN yourself to another aspect of consciousness. Yes, that might happen too. You might find yourself waking the next morning (and the morning after that, and the morning after that…) with “downloads” of strange and fantastical information: concepts about different levels of consciousness, the meaning of existence, quantum physics and harmonics, geometric patterns, the natural world, the words of mystics you’d never read before, immaterial phenomena, death, and the cosmos. You might find yourself suddenly endlessly curious, if you weren’t already so. Here’s the weird part: people might start looking at you differently in the grocery store. Like they really need to tell you something about their mother, something they’ve really got to get off their chest. They might feel better just by sitting near you. It could happen. It could happen to you, too.
