In this blend of image and imagination, the figure of the seer emerges combining reality and fantasy, history of art and enigma. The female characters charged with an aura of unreality are in debt with Ingres's Odalisques, as well as those mediums and women excessively devoted to the saints found in Cuba and everywhere.

Ernesto Ferriol was born at Holguin city, Cuba, in 1971. He is currently living and working in Japan since 2003. Ferriol's watercolors bring us face to face with a fantastical world where the human being is subjected to irrational forces able to provoke on him dramatic behaviors. The idea of a wonderland in total crisis has left behind its creatures struggling with new challenges. But when we approach his personal output we soon notice that this is not a pictorial universe, but a drawing universe. Ferriol keeps away from the actual discourse of painting to immerse himself in the field of drawing. He goes to the margins searching for that abundant material such as preparatory sketches, drawings, watercolors and the stories behind them, to give shape to his ideas within the tradition. Taking inspiration from Durer to Ingres, from 19 Century British watercolors to the bold watercolors created by Masami Teraoka. The discovery of the traditional Ukiyo-e art and the Japanese Shunga was essential for his erotic works. Ferriol has been working on paper for years and he often works on series. Large series creating parallel narratives that give birth to new characters like the "Seer Series". Sometimes all these imaginary characters are put together as part of the same constellation. A universe created for them in which the sordid, humor, wickedness and beauty try to find a balance. Most of his images although are pure invention are inspired from the history of art, from Cuban literary works, the Bible, from reality and universal history. Symbolism and traditional Japanese art has been great source of inspiration. Far from a simplistic evasion his works invite the audience to think reality critically. These works strive to causing some emotion or disturbing feeling in the receiver. Ferriol's work is deeply connected to the Classical tradition of art, to the works of the great masters as well as rooted in Cuban art. This aestheticism rest on a highly level of draftsmanship to captivate the audience, but soon a more complex feeling emerges to the surface. These watercolors refer to the contemporary audience to a reality that affects him directly, to a place where this audience always feels alluded.
