About The Artwork

Self Help (which of us will survive the other) is an oil on wood painting created in November, 2022. Depicting a series of various different images layered over the top of one another, including the artist's side profile, hands and body, the work explores the themes of tenderness and vulnerability in the face of healing from trauma. Through the densely layered imagery and ghost-like qualities of the subject's limbs, the painting reflects on two separate states of being; a past self, unaltered by trauma, that a subject longs to return to, and the present, healing, post-traumatic self.

Fiona Macpherson is an artist practicing on Gadigal land. Working primarily with oils, Fiona’s painting practice explores the nonlinear nature of healing while engaging with an autobiographical narrative of trauma. Motivated by impactful personal experiences, her work is focused on the social and psychological implications of sexual abuse, and the internal conflicts surrounding intimacy and vulnerability in the aftermath of sexual violence. Through vibrant and densely layered paintings, her work seeks to dissect and examine contrasting themes of silence and visibility, surface and underside, cognitive dissonance, tenderness, and rage. She lives and works in Sydney, NSW, and has recently completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) at UNSW Art & Design in 2022. She will be undertaking an international residency at Arteles Creative Centre in Hämeenkyrö, Finland, in January 2023.
