Self Portrait With Mirror Painting

I really like this picture. It's quite a contrast to my other self portrait from six years earlier. From the beginning I wanted to incorporate the frame of the mirror into the painting, more or less as you see it. We are confronted by a small truth of every self portrait before the advent of photography, that we are seeing the painter in reverse, and how we see reflections of ourselves is not exactly how everyone else sees us. It's a small thing, but nevertheless interesting, especially when applied to artist self portraits over the centuries. I love the the contours of my ill fitting coat, like a little mountain. The way the line of the zip follows those contours. The soft woollen sheen of the material. I do think I managed to capture some of the delicacy of colour and tone in the skin and the quality of the reflected light at the time it was painted.
